MG showed off its technology road map encompassing its electrification and self-driving technologies which are both heading to its next-generation vehicles. These developments are part of the brand’s commitment to making advanced tech more accessible, useful, and relevant for everyday drivers.
The first is MG’s next-generation plug-in hybrid system which offers enhanced performance and efficiency.
At the heart of the system is two new gasoline engines engineered specifically for hybrid applications. It’ll come standard with a turbocharger but with a choice between a 1.1-liter or 1.5-liter displacement.
The engines are then connected to an all-new hybrid transmission with Power Split and Motor Decoupling technology. Power Split allows for the distribution of power between the combustion engine and electric motors allowing the powertrain to operate at its most efficient without the limitations of a fixed-ratio transmission. On the other hand, Motor Decoupling introduces a dedicated disconnect mechanism that completely isolates the generator during pure electric driving reducing mechanical drag.
Aside from higher efficiency, the new Plug-In Hybrid+ system allows for a sub-6-second 0 to 100 km/h time and an 80 to 120 km/h time as little as 3.5 seconds. Enhanced torque delivery also improves hill-start capability by up to 72 percent.
The new Plug-In Hybrid+ system will also integrate MG’s semi-solid battery technology called SolidCore providing more consistent power delivery, improved range stability, and enhanced performance.
MG is also poised to introduce its next-generation ADAS technology very soon.
Perhaps one of the more panned things about the current-generation MG models, the new system will offer one-touch intelligent parking assistance allowing models equipped with the system to automatically detect a suitable parking space, and slot into or out of the space with just a touch of a button. They’re also working to integrate more parking scenarios into the system, including head-in parking, remote straight line control, remote parking assistance, and parking position preference.
Finally, the MG Pilot will also provide Navigate On Autopilot or NOA. With driver supervision, the system will be able to assist with entering and exiting highways, lane selection, lane changes, and overtaking. The first production model with Highway NOA will be a new MG SUV, scheduled for launch in late 2027.
