Toyota Dethrones Honda As Most Sought After Car Brand By Filipinos

After two years as the Philippines’ most searched car brand (2020 and 2021), Honda has been de-throned from the top spot by who else but undisputed market leader, Toyota.

Based on Google Trends data compiled by Compare The Market, Toyota is now the most searched car brand by Filipinos—a sentiment echoed in 69 out of 155 countries included in the study. In fact, Toyota accounts for around 44.5 percent of total searches—up from 31 percent in 2021. This shows just how far Toyota has left its competitors in the dust.

In second place is Honda, while in third is Suzuki.

According to the Australian-based Insurance provider, Toyota’s increased global popularity isn’t just down to its wide variety of vehicles and even its stellar reputation as a trusted automotive brand, but it’s also down to statements made by CEO Akio Toyoda.

Statements made by Toyoda this year ran counter to the hungry demand for EVs. While other car brands have promised to go completely electric in the near future, the Japanese carmaker said it would focus on providing a variety of powertrains for future vehicles—including combustion engines.

As for the country that loves Toyota the most online—that’s the United States. In 2022, the nation had a whopping average monthly search volume of 2,740,000. Yet, that wasn’t the most searched automotive brand there; it was Ford.

Trailing behind in second and third place globally are BMW (most searched in 36 countries), and Mercedes (10 countries). Alongside Toyota, the three brands have consistently held the podium for each of the five years in the Google Trends study. It was only in 2019 when Toyota lost the throne to BMW which secured an impressive 118 countries to its name.

After gaining impressive traction in 2021 and closing the gap between it and BMW by almost 70 percent, Mercedes lost more than half of the countries it held last year over the course of 2022.

Other names that saw big losses in 2022 were the likes of Tesla, Renault, Rolls Royce, and Mazda—all of which were absent as a top brand in any nation this year, unlike 2021, where they were the favorite in at least one country.

On the other side of the track, Jeep had success for the first time since 2018. It was the most searched car brand in Bhutan, followed by GM and Tesla.

Nissan also saw considerable improvement in its ranking. The manufacturer increased from 10th place in 2021 to 6th place in 2022, which was the largest advance other than Jeep’s debut in the top 10.

Elsewhere, Kia is popular in some Middle Eastern and north African countries. It was the most searched for brand in Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Palestine, Syria, and Uzbekistan. It was also the most searched for brand in other countries including Ecuador, India, and Vietnam.

Volvo is popular in Scandinavia and neighbouring regions of Europe. It was number one in Finland and Sweden, which isn’t too surprising given that’s where the brand was born and where it still produces its cars today. It was the second most searched car manufacturer in Norway and third most Googled car brand in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

The results of the study could be indicative of what people are interested in, and may not be aligned to what people are driving.
