Will You Blindly Reserve Geely's BYD-Beating EX2 EV Hatchback?

Just how much do you trust Geely? At the Manila International Auto Show, the Chinese brand previewed their upcoming all-electric hatchback, the EX2. Would be buyers can now fall in line for the BYD Seagull-beating sub-compact (this was one of the models that helped Geely overtake BYD in its home market) with a reservation fee of just P 5,000. But there’s a catch: it’s a “blind reservation.”

“Blind reservation” means Geely Philippines has yet to finalize the EX2’s price, so you have to trust them that you’re getting your money’s worth. Having said that, some indicative pricing has already been thrown out and it’s ranging from P 950,000 to P 1,000,000. It’s not cheaper than the Seagull per se, but Geely thinks buyers will get over the higher price tag for the EX2’s more sophisticated engineering and design.

Also running on Geely’s Global Energy Architecture, the EX2 is not your typical sub-compact hatch. For one, it has independent suspension all around and, get this, rear wheel drive. This affords it better high-speed stability and control at the expense of a rather large 4.95-meter turning radius. It also opens up unique packaging solutions including a 70-liter front trunk or frunk, and a 375-liter cargo space (1,320 liters with the rear seats folded down).

Also confirmed is the EX2’s powertrain: the single electric motor makes around 115 horsepower (85 kW) and 150 Nm of torque. The 11-in-1 drive unit gets power from a modestly-sized 39.4 kWh LFP battery (sourced from CATL) that delivers 325 kilometers of range. It also features a thermal management system with liquid cooling.

Based on the government documentation, the EX2 could come in two variants—the Pro and the Max. Standard are all LED head- and taillights. Exterior differences are down to the Max having two-tone exterior paint and larger wheels (205/60R16 versus 205/65R15 on the Pro).

Inside, the confirmed specs include “vegan leather” seats, 8.8-inch LCD gauge cluster, and a 14.6-inch central touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Differences between the two include a 6-way power adjustment for the driver, more speakers (6 versus 4 on the Pro), 256-color ambient lighting, and a wireless charging pad. The Max will also stand to get a 540-degree panoramic camera and ADAS functionality.

In China, where competitive pressure in the EV segment is nothing short of relentless, the EX2 earned its stripes fast with monthly sales exceeding 50,000 units. This made it the best-selling model across all categories in 2025, while also holding the record for the fastest delivery ramp-up ever for a Chinese B-segment vehicle. Do you think it’ll be able to replicate this success locally?

  2. Scary. Why are Chinese automakers asking for reservation without even revealing the price tag? What kind of business strategy is this?

    1. To gauge tangible interest. If you’re willing to place a deposit, it mostly means your buying interest is real.

  3. No i won't. Using logic, i will observe if Geely can still recover from their past brouhaha. Only then i can consider them. But for now, it's BYD for me.

    2. I never said Geely having inferior build quality. I only said i will observe if they can turn around their poor after sales service here in the Philippines especially with their past scandal & tons of costumer complaints. Only then i will consider them. I hope you get my point.

    3. That dude has some kind of hate boner against BYD. They don't go into details about their claims when you try to talk to them so don't feel the need to explain yourself because he sure won't. lol

    4. Geely already took over from Sojitz who was the previous PH distributor. Sojitz is the one who failed the aftermarket concerns that's why Geely took over. Geely PH focused on their aftermarket strategy and established it last 2025.
Unlike BYD, Ayala is the distributor. we can expect aftermarket price for BYD will be more expensive(top-up price of ayala over the BYD price).
Expect Geely aftermarket price will be more affordable since it's Geely who is personally supplying the parts.
