Review: 2025 Toyota GR Yaris 8AT
You could say that the Toyota GR Yaris is a personal forbidden fruit. Just as I was supposed to sample one in 2021, one nasty accident meant Toyota Motor Philippines pulled the entire GR press fleet out of rotation. That was four years ago. Now that some select hacks have earned Toyota’s trust, I opted to try the updated GR Yaris for myself, and boy, was the wait worth it.

Mazda's Decision To Offer AutoExe Parts In The Mazda3 Is Pure Genius
It looks great, handles even greater. Everyone who loves driving will be enamored by the Mazda3. Six years on, it’s still the definitive compact sedan/hatchback out there, flaws and all (read our 2019 Mazda 3.0 Sportback review and 2024 Mazda3 2.0 HEV Fastback review). If anything, the only thing it lacks is a proper sporty variant. Although you could counter that its sportiness is inherently baked into the four variants you could get straight from the showroom floor, being JDM, a part of you wishes Mazda would offer something along the “tuner” line. After all, if Toyota could do it with Gazoo Racing Sport (GR Sport) and Honda with Road Sailing (RS), why couldn’t Mazda?

Review: 2025 Ford Bronco Outer Banks w/ Sasquatch Package
A bit of trivia: I almost ended up working for Ford as a product planner sometime in the 2000s. Though I passed all the interviews and even got an offer, the Blue Oval’s then marketing guy decided I’d be better off continuing my career as a motoring journalist, and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing for close to 30 years now. Now, I write about cars for a living, I still can’t help but look at the presence of products and its features the way a product planner would. Does it make sense? Does it contribute to the brand’s overall image? Is it priced right?

Review: 2024 Lynk & Co 06 Hyper Halo
For a car company marketing itself to the “connected generation,” it’s a mystery why Lynk & Co went with such a convoluted name. Those who know a bit of programming know that the ampersand—the “&”—can potentially corrupt websites. Those who don’t, know how difficult it is to use Lynk & Co in hashtags and even website URLs.

First Drive: 2025 Nissan X-Trail E-Power E-4orce
If there’s one criticism that you can throw the Nissan X-Trail’s way, it’s that it doesn’t have a strong identity. When the first-generation appeared in 2000 (2003 in the Philippines), it was this boxy pseudo-off-roader complete with plastic fenders and a fairly advanced all-wheel drive system. By the time the third-generation model rolled out in 2021, it was the very definition of “ho-hum.” It had a set of jump seats at the back, but even that wasn’t enough to overcome its plain-as-vanilla personality. Buyers seemed to agree.

Review: 2024 Mazda CX-5 AWD Sport
It’s hard to believe but the current second-generation Mazda CX-5 has been around for roughly eight years now. While it’s managed to outlast some relationships, it was birthed in a completely different world back then—electrification wasn’t a buzz word and no one took Chinese car brands seriously. Fast forward to today and you’ve got everyone and their uncle talking about hybrids (or EVs) and the Chinese have carved a solid five percent share of sales. It’s this sort of world the 2024 CX-5 finds itself in and one where, in some regard, it’s playing catch up.

Review: 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 G HEV
How’s this for a car buyer’s conundrum: for P 1,498,000 you can have this, the base Corolla Cross 1.8 G HEV, or for P 1,604,000, you can have the fully-loaded Yaris Cross 1.5 S HEV. For all intents and purposes, the P 106,000 price spread is negligible, especially if you opt to finance it for a period of five years. Now, internet forums are filled with debates between TNGA (Corolla Cross) versus DNGA (Yaris Cross). Issues with the DNGA (hello recalls) notwithstanding, which one’s the better buy?
