Toyota Launches Limited Edition Two-Seater GRMN Yaris

Toyota is adding a higher performance version of its GR Yaris: the GRMN Yaris, and it was shown for the first time at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. Using lessons learned from motorsports competition, it features more power and improved handling over the GR Yaris.

For starters, the GRMN Yaris has its weight reduced by 20 kilograms thanks to the use of high-rigidity carbon (twill weave CFRP) for its hood, roof, and spoiler as well as the removal of the rear seats. Then, Toyota Gazoo Racing engineers increased the width by 10 mm for aerodynamic improvement, while vehicle height has been reduced by 10 mm. Spot welds have been increased by 545 and along with 12 meters more structural adhesive results in increased rigidity.

Weight reduction and body stiffening aside, the GRMN Yaris gets a revised six-speed manual with a close-ratio gear and low final gear set. For gear ratios, close-ratio 1st to 4th gears makes efficient use of the engine power band, and low final gears for optimized driving force have been combined. To improve reliability during endurance races and other situations, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and the final gears have been reinforced. Things are capped off by a mechanical limited slip differential replacing the Torsen-type LSD.

The GRMN Yaris remains powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-3 with 272 horsepower, but torque is up from 370 Nm to 390 Nm.

Toyota is capped off the GRMN Yaris’s production run to just 500 units and they’ll be made available with two optional performance packs. The Circuit Package adds BBS GRMN dedicated 18-inch wheels, larger brakes, a large rear spoiler, and adjustable Bilstein shock absorbers. Meanwhile, the Rally Package will get an under guard set along with GR shock absorbers and short stabilizer link set and a GR roll bar.

Additionally, through the two Update Program and Personalization Program services, Toyota will offer customers the chance to update their GRMN Yaris be it through engine strengthening, driving control improvements, or tweaks to the onboard software including a tailor-made customization program.

Meanwhile, for GR Yaris customers who feel shortchanged, Toyota will offer some GRMN Yaris performance parts around the third quarter of 2022.
