The Ferrari 296 Speciale Is A Sharper, Faster Plug-In Hybrid Supercar

Coming from a storied lineage of special, sharpened version of mid-engined Ferrari supercars like the 360 Challenge Stradale, F430 Scuderia, and 458 Speciale, the Prancing Horse brand just unveiled the lighter, faster, more agile 296 Speciale (watch our first impressions of the 296 GTS).

Retaining its plug-in hybrid architecture—a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 and an electric motor—the 296 Speciale uses bits from the F80 hypercar to produce even more astonishing numbers. Using titanium connecting rods together with hardened pistons and a lighter crankshaft, the combustion engine outputs climb to 700 horsepower (up 37 from the 296 GTB). Paired with a more powerful electric motor (up 13 horsepower to 180), and the combined figure rises to 880 horsepower—50 more than the 296 GTB.

Like the 296 GTB, the 296 Speciale sports a 7.45-kWh high-voltage battery stored in the underfloor of the car. This helps give it an all-electric range of 25 kilometers at speeds of up to 135 km/h.

Meanwhile, the 8-speed dual clutch has been recalibrated for faster times. Among the improvements is the use of the electric motor to fill in the “gaps” whenever gearshifts occur during acceleration.

More than just raw power, Ferrari engineers have worked on weight-saving measures for the engine including milling the cylinder heads and engine block. The engine fasteners are also made of titanium like you would see in a race car. All in all, this has resulted in 15 percent of all the weight savings they’ve achieved here.

Other weight savings in the 296 Speciale come in the extensive use of carbon fiber. For example, the door panel is made of a single block of carbon fiber, molding things like the grab handle into the design. The sound from the speakers, on the other hand, are made to pass through holes cut directly into the door. The center console tunnel is also made of the lightweight stuff.

Outside, the 296 Speciale is all about increased aero performance. These are seen in the vented side skirts, the aggressive front bumpers, and the larger diffuser. There are even protruding side wings located at the tail. At the sides, it gets new five-spoke forged wheels with Michelin Cup 2 tires.

A new color—Verde Nürburgring—has been developed specially for the 296 Speciale. The new livery, which is now also offered for the first time ever in white, consists of one or two longitudinal stripes extending over the entire length of the car. Customers can also complement the livery with a number of their choice from 00 to 99.

Underneath, the suspension sports a dedicated suspension setup carrying more negative camber than the 296 GTB. It also rides lower and sports 15 percent stiffer springs. The 6D sensor has also been optimized for faster, more accurate brake biasing and traction control. All in all, it helps the 296 Speciale lap Ferrari’s Fiorano test track as fast as the SF90 despite a 106-horsepower deficit and two fewer driven wheels.

In true Ferrari fashion, if you want to buy a 296 Speciale, it’s already sold out. Ferrari just opened the order books to existing customers, and the entire production run is now spoken for. Customer deliveries for the 296 Speciale are expected around early 2026 marking the start of Ferrari 296’s farewell run.
