Just when you thought Subaru couldn’t make its relationship Toyota more blatant, the 2026 Solterra takes on a very different design language; one that’s presumably inspired not by another Subaru SUV, but by, of all things, a Toyota Corolla Cross.
It’s no secret but Subaru’s partly owned by Toyota, and as a result, they’ve collaborated “Toyobaru” twins—the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86, and of course, the EV triplets—the Subaru Solterra, Toyota bZ4X, and Lexus RZ. However, it’s weird that for the Solterra’s 2026 redesign, Subaru’s chosen to be inspired by something as generic as a suppository, especially in white.
Subaru says it’s all for aero, we say it’s sheer laziness as these photos speak for themselves. The front-end’s been completely redesigned with a blanked-out grille, illuminated logo, and typical of SUVs these days, compound headlights with separate units for the main beams. A new rear spoiler and tailgate garnish, and wheels (18 or 20s) complete the changes. Body-colored fenders are available on certain colors.
Underneath, updates to the all-electric platform frees up 25 percent more mileage (458 kilometers or 285 miles) using a 74.7-kWh battery thanks to a new battery pre-conditioning system. The all-wheel drive-equipped Solterra makes 233 horsepower, but a new “Solterra XT” variant has more oomph at 338 horsepower.
Charging, at least in North America takes less than 35 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent thanks to a 150-kW peak speed.
The independent front and rear motors have an improved controller, enabling more flexible power distribution and combined with the dual X-Mode system gives the Solterra genuine off-road capability. Refinements to the suspension and electric power steering have been made for better handling and responsiveness.
Inside, the 2026 Solterra now has a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Like the all-new Outback, it looks to be a Toyota/Lexus-based system. New 15-watt wireless chargers (there are two of them) are standard issue as are high-power USB Type C charging points.
The 2026 Solterra will go on sale in North America later this year with more markets soon to follow.
