Hyundai Wins Third World Electric Vehicle Of The Year Award With Sub-Compact Inster

The Hyundai Inster is the 2025 World Car Electric Vehicle of the Year. This is the third World Electric Vehicle win for Hyundai. Previously, there were two consecutive back-to-back World Electric Vehicle wins for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in 2022 and the Ioniq 6 in 2023.

As a brand, Hyundai has won a total of eight awards in the World Car Awards’ 21-year history.

The 96-jury panel selected the Inster out of 31 vehicles that competed in the World Electric Vehicle category this year. The Inster beat out the two other finalists—the Kia EV3 and the Porsche Macan Electric.

Vehicles eligible for World Electric Vehicle of the Year must be powered solely by one or more electric motors, must be produced in volumes of at least 5,000 units per year and must be “on-sale” in at least two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, USA) on at least two separate continents within the period January 1, 2024 and March 30, 2025.

The Inster comes with two battery sizes—a 42-kWh as standard and a Long-Range version with a 49-kWh battery. Both models are powered by a single motor that delivers either 97 horsepower in the base and 115 horsepower in the Long-Range version. Both have 147 Nm of torque. The projected range is around 355 kilometers based on an energy consumption of 6.53 kilometers per kWh.

When using a 120 kW DC High-Power charging station, it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes under optimal conditions. It also comes equipped with an 11-kW on-board charger as standard, while a battery heating system and high-efficiency heat pump are available. It also has V2L functionality.

“The Hyundai Inster has been a winner with customers since we introduced it. It’s very gratifying that the experts on the prestigious World Car Awards jury feel the same way. The combination of compelling design, range, enjoyable driving characteristics, intuitive infotainment, and technology that customers appreciate is emblematic of Hyundai’s approach of delivering exceptional value to our customers. The fact that our global portfolio is successful both commercially and critically speaks to the hard-working people throughout the Hyundai value chain who are delivering some of the best vehicles on the road today. Thank you to all the jurors for your service to this great industry,” said José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.
