Honda To Battle Entry-Level Chinese SUVs With 2022 ZR-V?

The next piece in Honda’s product puzzle has emerged: this is our first look at their newest sub-compact SUV. Rumored to be called the ZR-V, the crossover is slated for a global reveal next week at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show or GIIAS.

Covered in drapes at the all-new BR-V premiere in September, the ZR-V was once again shown at the Indonesian launch of the 11th generation Civic (coming to the Philippines within the month) and all-new City sedan.

The computer-generated projection clearly shows thin LED headlights set atop an angular body style. As far as Hondas are concerned, it will also have a unique lighting signature shown by the Matrix-style clustering on both ends. It’s also very clear that Honda will offer their newest “-RV” family in a sporty RS trim.

Officially, not much is known about the ZR-V, except that it’ll share the same platform as the 7-seater BR-V. Honda though will chop the length considerably, with reports saying it will measure not more than four meters in length. If that is true, it’s set to be a rival to the Toyota Raize, Nissan Magnite, Ford EcoSport, and even the entry-level Chinese SUVs.

With that, expect the ZR-V to share the BR-V’s running gear which means it’ll have a 121 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque mated to a CVT. A bigger possibility is that it’ll share the Brio’s 1.2-liter i-VTEC engine to meet fuel economy requirements. If that’s the case, this 5-seater crossover will have 90 horsepower and 110 Nm of torque—not bad considering its small size.
