2024 Kia EV5 Is Kia's Newest Battery Electric SUV

Kia is continuing its march to electrification with the launch of more battery electric vehicles. This time, the EV5, a compact SUV-sized BEV was revealed at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. It will go on sale there first in the latter part of 2023 with plans to expand it as a global product in select markets by 2024.

The production version of the EV5 stays true to the EV5 Concept shown earlier this year. Following the EV6 and EV9, the EV5 uses the brand’s “Opposites United” design philosophy using the “Bold for Nature” pillar. The EV5 features a modern interpretation of the Kia tiger mask grille complete with the “Star Map lighting,” while the rest of the SUV goes for a solid body with soft surfacing. A new matte color—Ivory Silver joins the palette.

The Korean automaker didn’t divulge mechanical details yet, but reports suggest that it will use a different architecture compared to the EV6 and EV9. For example, it will use a 400-volt instead of an 800-volt system in order to make the EV5 more affordable at the expense of slower charging times. As for batteries, for the Chinese domestic market, it will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries (again for cost reasons), while global markets are said to use nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries. Battery size will be capped at 77.4 kWh—similar to the EV6.

Inside, the EV5 draws inspiration from its EV9 SUV. With that, it prioritizes interior space and a lounge-like feel. Variable mood lighting—found all across the cabin—is standard and can be customized in one of 64 available colors. Powering the infotainment system is Kia’s new generation connected car Navigation & Cockpit (ccNC). Two large 12.3-inch screens dominate the otherwise minimalist-looking dashboard. Interior upholstery options include synthetic leather for the base version and two woven options for higher-trim variants.

More details on the Kia EV5, including market availability, will be revealed in October when the brand celebrates Kia EV Day.
