Can The 345-Horsepower Lynk & Co 08 EMP Dance With The BYD Tang DM-i?

The BYD Tang DM-i may soon have company in the form of the Lynk & Co 08 EMP. Previewed at the Manila International Auto Show last April, the Lynk & Co 08 EMP has just received its LTO homologation pointing to a possible market launch in the coming months.

The Lynk & Co 08 EMP is currently the longest-range plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). It offers an all-electric range of 200 kilometers thanks to a 39.6-kWh battery—easily twice the size of typical PHEVs. Due to the size of its nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) lithium-ion battery, it can be charged either using AC or DC fast charging, with the latter taking just 33 minutes for a 10 to 80 percent charge.

Confirmed in its LTO homologation, the 08 EMP will employ a 139-horsepower, 230 Nm turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that primarily acts as a generator. Most of the thrust is provided by a 155 kW (208 horsepower), 350 Nm electric motor. Combined, the entire system makes 345 horsepower routed through a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. This allows the 08 EMP to offer a 6.8-second 0 to 100 km/h sprint and a 185 km/h top speed. A large, 60-liter tank allows a maximum range more than 1,000 kilometers.

Confirmed in its LTO specifications are the 08 EMP’s dimensions. At 4,820 mm in length, 1,915 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height (wheelbase is 2,848 mm)—it’s easily in the same size category as the BYD Tang DM-i. It rides on 235/55R19 wheels and tires. Unlike the Tang, however, this is purely a 5-seater SUV.

As for the specs, Lynk & Co Philippines is keeping mum, but in other markets, the 19-inch wheels and tire package point to the Core trim. This means features such as LED headlights with auto high-beam, rain-sensing wipers, power adjustable front seats, user-adjustable ambient lighting, dual zone climate control, 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless device charging, panoramic sunroof, and a high-fidelity speaker system.

It could also benefit from a host of ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot indicators, and more.

  1. If the Lynk and Co 08 EMP will be cheaper than the BYD Tang and offer plenty more range, then it could be a hit.
