Subaru has launched their third all-electric vehicle, the first-ever Subaru Uncharted. Once again enlisting the help of Toyota, the Uncharted brings the six-star brand straight into, pardon the pun, uncharted territory as it ditches its trademark all-wheel drive in a SUV/crossover—the first time in over 30 years.
Based off the Toyota C-HR, the Uncharted is a Crosstrek-sized EV that offers 224 horsepower in its standard front-wheel drive guise. A more powerful all-wheel drive version, complete with X-Mode, comes with 344 horsepower thanks to dual electric motors.
Either way, both versions get a 77-kWh (74.7-kWh usable) battery offering 584 kilometers of range between charges in the front- and 470 kilometers in the all-wheel drive version. The dual motor version promises brisk performance with a 0 to 100 km/h time of around 5 seconds. In Europe, an even smaller battery—57.7 kWh—will be made available and this one offers 444 kilometers of range.
The Uncharted offers fast charging of up to 150 kW, enabling a 10 to 80 percent top up in just 30 minutes. In North America, it comes with a 11-kW on-board charger, while in Europe, it’s got double that—22 kW.
While the basic platform is all Toyota, Subaru has had a hand in its chassis development. The Uncharted will offer “impressive straight-line stability, handling, and grip on loose surfaces such as gravel, dirt, or snow.” Its compact 5.5-meter turning radius means maneuverability in urban confines, while a 210 mm ground clearance offers the confidence of tackling light trails.
The Uncharted is further differentiated from its Toyota cousin thanks to its distinctive lighting signature (including an illuminated logo) and choice between 18 or 20-inch wheels. Inside, it offers orange accents, soft-touch materials, a squared steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, dual wireless chargers, Harman Kardon speaker system, and a panoramic sunroof.
In terms of safety, it has the Subaru EyeSight driver-assist technologies, including available Pre-Collision Braking, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitors, Lane Departure Alert, Emergency Stop Assist, Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, and more. A 360-degree camera, Traffic Jam Assist, and Lane Change Assist are available on higher trims.
