Toyota Thinks The World Is Ready For An All-Electric Land Cruiser

Are you ready for a battery electric version of the Land Cruiser? That could very well be the case as far as Toyota’s concerned. They unwrapped the Land Cruiser Se—a concept that they will show at the Japan Mobility Show.

The Land Cruiser Se migrates to a unibody design that offers “highly responsive handling.” Yet, Toyota says it remains confident in tackling rough terrain (even if the ground clearance looks conspicuously low). That said, it’s a big boy—measuring in at 5,150 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width, and 1,705 mm in height. It 3,050 mm wheelbase means a total seating capacity of seven adults.

As with any concept, there’s no detail surrounding the powertrain, but because it’s a battery electric vehicle, it offers a “high-torque driving experience.”

As for styling, the Land Cruiser Se is boxy, if a bit generic. It also does without the traditional Toyota “T” logo and opting to have the Toyota script on both its front nose and rear-end.

Perhaps the most curious part of the official teaser is how Toyota points to the Land Cruiser as a “brand.” It could very well signify the carmaker’s intention to grow the Land Cruiser range as they did with the Crown and Century.

Currently, the Land Cruiser family has two members—the full-sized Land Cruiser 300 and the mid-sized LandCruiser (aka Land Cruiser Prado). The appearance of this BEV concept could mean something akin to the Range Rover Velar is coming to the line-up; perhaps related to the Lexus TX/Toyota Grand Highlander.

Previously, reports also suggested of a compact-sized Land Cruiser—the Land Hopper. That turned out to be an electric mobility concept which the brand will also show at the upcoming show.
