The Toyota Urban Cruiser Isn't Efficient And It's All Because Of A Software Glitch

If you find the Toyota Urban Cruiser to be less efficient than you thought (us included), it may all just be a software glitch. And now, Toyota Motor Philippines is issuing a fix.

Toyota has found that the 17 Urban Cruisers running around (produced between November 27, 2025 to April 11, 2026) may be improperly displaying the average energy efficiency on the integrated display system (infotainment system). Due to a defect in the software, the car may be displaying a lower than actual average energy efficiency.

Since we just had the Urban Cruiser out for a full review (coming out real soon), we did some quick math based on our unit’s display (note: we had the Urban Cruiser when Toyota Motor Philippines issued the recall).

In the display, we averaged 5.58 km/kWh, a paltry number considering the Urban Cruiser’s overall size, weight, and performance. On the other hand, it shows that we’ve run 145.2 kilometers consuming 32 percent of battery. Knowing it has a 61.1 kWh (59.8 kWh usable) LFP battery pack, we can compute that 32 percent of 59.8 is 19.136 which is the amount of kWh we’ve consumed thus far. Going back to our distance traveled, 145.2 km divided by 19.136 is 7.58 km/kWh. That’s a notable 2 km/kWh variance over what the infotainment displayed in big, bold numbers. Clearly, there’s something amiss here.

To rectify this, Toyota will reprogram the Integrated Display System ECU free of charge. And of course, this will be done at no cost to the customer.

While Toyota encourages owners to set an appointment with any authorized dealership to fix the issue, because this is a Customer Satisfaction Campaign (CSC), it isn’t a safety-related recall. This means that you can also hold off the programming until your next scheduled PMS.

Urban Cruiser owners can check out if their vehicle’s affected through this online VIN checker.
