New car sales recover strongly last September, selling more than 40,240 units according to industry estimates and official CAMPI-TMA data. This makes it the third-highest monthly sales performance of the year. It is also a 17 percent increase versus August 2026. ICE sales rebounded 19 percent, while electrified vehicles (xEVs) jumped 14 percent (based on full available industry data).
With less weather-related disruptions (not to mention the “ghost month” phenomenon), CAMPI-TMA members report that September 2026 sales reached 35,722 units—a 20.6 percent month-on-month increase compared to August.
There are double digit month-on-month increases across all vehicle categories:
- Passenger Cars: +20.6% (7,799 units)
- Commercial Vehicles Cat. 1 (Asian Utility Vehicles & MPVs): +35.5% (6,518 units)
- Commercial Vehicles Cat. 2 (Light Commercial Vehicles): +18% (20,553 units)
- Commercial Vehicles Cat. 3 (Light-Duty Trucks & Buses): +29.4% (489 units)
- Commercial Vehicles Cat. 4 (Medium-Duty Trucks & Buses): +48.7% (293 units)
- Commercial Vehicles Cat. 5 (Heavy-Duty Trucks & Buses): +133.3% (70 units)
However, a closer look at CAMPI-TMA data reveals that this figure is still 5.8 percent lower than the same month last year’s. All segments show declines with the heaviest hit segment being the price-sensitive CV Cat. 1 (Asian Utility Vehicle & MPV) segment with a 17.9 percent year-on-year decline. The hardest hit brands include Mitsubishi (-44.3 percent), Nissan (-47.9 percent), and Suzuki (-11.3 percent). The only segment to show an increase? CV Cat. 5 (Heavy-Duty Trucks & Buses) which is up +1.4 percent.
In terms of brand rankings last September, Toyota has once again surpassed the 50 percent market share. This means that last month, 1 out of every 2 new vehicles sold was a Toyota. Mitsubishi retains a comfortable second spot, but the rest—from third all the way to tenth—is hotly contested with barely any difference between them.
