Ownership Costs Compared: 2022 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.6 V GR Sport vs Corolla Altis 1.8 HEV

In 2019, when Toyota Motor Philippines launched their first-ever mainstream gasoline-electric hybrid, the Corolla Altis, we took a look if taking the plunge towards electrified vehicles made economic sense. You can check out the full article here, but in gist, Corolla Altis Hybrid owners will only make up for the higher purchase price if they either drive more than 71,178 kilometers over a three-year period (23,726 kilometers per year), or if gas prices breach P 96.71 per liter.

Review: 2002 Honda Civic VTi-S vs Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8G

Ever since the introduction of the Honda Civic back in the early 1990s, it became an overnight success.  The ‘bug-eyed’ generation seemed to have no end as it seemed that everyone owned a Civic, whether it was an LXi, VTi or SiR.  Funny thing is that when Toyota released its Corolla back in 1998 it had all the safety equipment and some of the luxuries like better plastics and an upgraded stereo system.  Nonetheless, the Civic still ran away with the sales lead.

Review: 2014 Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0 V

Photos by Ulysses Ang
I can’t remember the first time I felt so excited about driving a Toyota Corolla. After all, its reputation precedes it; it’s been the butt of jokes over its dull as cardboard driving experience. But, it’s cemented its reputation as a no-nonsense, ultra-reliable-until-the-world-ends type of car that’s created a following of over 40 million user-choosers. For all intents and purposes, Toyota could have continued churning out Corollas in the same recipe as the original, but instead they injected some new flavors. The question is: is this tangy new twist going to do wonders to the Corolla formula or is this simply the automotive equivalent of New Coke?

Review: 2014 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.6 V

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Ask me what compact sedan I’d consider getting for myself, without batting an eye, I’d answer with the Toyota Corolla Altis. Label me a sellout, label me ignorant—the fact you’ve pre-judged the all-new Corolla Altis means you’ve been living under a rock the past year. In that time, Toyota has masterfully re-created the country’s best-selling compact sedan, transforming it from a mundane Point A to Point B transport into something that even I, a self-confessed car nut, will consider plopping down hard-earned cash on. And though much attention’s been showered on the 2.0 V, the P 1,201,000 price tag is a tad steep for some people. Move down a notch, there’s the nicely-loaded P 999,000 1.6 V, a car that doesn’t break the psychological million-peso mark and the subject of this test drive.

Is Taking the Hybrid Plunge Worth It? Comparing the Ownership Cost of the Corolla Altis (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Due to popular demand, we traced back our previous test drives and compared the Corolla Altis Hybrid using more realistic figures (i.e. our very own test drive fuel mileages). 9/11.

Targeting women and married couples, Toyota is clearly tugging more on the sensibilities of compact car buyers than the senses. Though improved in every conceivable aspect, buyers would likely flock to the Corolla Altis mainly thanks to Toyota’s reputation for making bullet-proof cars and of course, lower ownership costs.

Review: 2005 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8G

Five to ten years ago, the choice for a first car was as diverse as the colors on a Charlie Chaplin flick: it was either the Toyota Corolla or the Honda Civic.  Sure enough, sales figures and market shares simply swung back and forth, while the rest were just content with whatever table scrap that’s left.  Fast forward to today, and things couldn’t have been more different.  Aside from a resurgence from the likes of Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan; these two Japanese automotive giants are facing competition from the Americans, namely Ford and Chevrolet.  Add the fact that there are now excellently built sub-compacts, microscopic SUVs and a zillion other choices all catered to making every buyer happy.  Now, the question beckons: can the Toyota Corolla keep up with the changing market place?

Review: 2017 Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0V

Step back and erase any notion you may have of the Toyota Corolla Altis. Often panned for its uncanny ability to be consistently, monotonously boring; it’s easily the fridge, the Nokia 3310, the Nicolas Cage of the compact car world. It’s reliable transportation that gets you where you need to go, but when people ask what you drive, you reflexively answer: “I don’t know, but I do know it’s white.” But while Mr. Cage is still longing for his next Leaving Las Vegas in his sea of B-films, Toyota’s been slowly chipping away at the Corolla Altis’s stodgy repertoire. Today, it’s managing to crank up the excitement just a little bit.

2020 Toyota Corolla Altis vs Mazda3 vs Honda Civic vs Subaru Impreza vs MG 6

Forget crossovers, SUVs, and pickups for a minute—there’s a compact car war brewing resulting in a wider, more competitive range of choices. Starting with the arrival of the refreshed Civic early this year, the battlefield is now joined by two other compact car stalwarts: the 2020 Mazda3 and 2020 Toyota Corolla Altis. All these tables are high-res, so feel free to download them (please, no cropping of the watermark though...we know who does this).

Review: 2020 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8 Hybrid

Since its appearance in the Philippine market, the Corolla has built a stellar reputation based on three pillars: quality, durability, and reliability. They may not be the sexiest adjectives to put on a brochure, but they’re enough to convince more than 220,000 Filipinos to spend hard-earned money on one. True enough, everyone knows someone who’s owned a Corolla at least once in their life, and they’ll be the first to tell you that unexciting as it is, they’re built to outlast the apocalypse. And that’s a bit troubling for Toyota’s top man, Akio Toyoda who wants a bit more excitement in his cars.

Yes, Toyota Just Launched A Corolla Altis Named After The Nürburgring

The Toyota Corolla Altis could be considered as the quintessential appliance of compact sedans so it’s quite surprising that the guys at Toyota Thailand used it to come out with this special edition model: the Toyota Corolla Altis Nürburgring.

Stopping Bad Coffee and Cars: Coffee Crawling with the Toyota Corolla Altis

Ah, the humble cup of coffee. Most of us take one or two in the morning to start the day off without even caring about the magic that happens inside that pot. As the world’s most consumed caffeinated drink, it’s become so common that for as long as you can brew, sip, and go on your way, everything is right with the world. This was the 1960s.

Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid: Paving For A Sustainable Way Forward

The harrowing effects of climate change in recent decades have led to the increased discussion on sustainability the world over. When we speak of reducing carbon footprint, the spotlight used to be centered upon segregation, recycling, and safe waste disposal technologies. Fast-forward to today — albeit, recent years — and the quest has gone beyond the household. It is admittedly too slow for most people to adapt to sustainable living at a personal level because there are simply too many factors to consider: research, time, resources, and above all, cost; because the means to clean and green living are not always the most economical for middle-income families.

Would You Consider A P1.736M Gazoo Racing-Tuned Corolla Altis?

While the Corolla Altis GR Sport is a global model, it may not take on the same appearance as its counterpart in Europe or Taiwan. Instead, if Toyota Motor Philippines does decide to bring this sporty variant in, expect it to be closer in both looks and specs to the one just launched in Thailand.
