Honda To Shut Powertrain Plant in Tochigi By 2025

Honda has announced that it will close down its powertrain manufacturing unit located in Moka City, Tochigi Prefecture by 2025.

Established in 1970, this powertrain manufacturing unit is responsible for several parts used in Honda engines. This includes engine valves, crank shafts, CVT pulleys, and even the SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive)’s transfer case assembly that is used in vehicles such as the Honda NSX (see lead photo).

According to the carmaker, the closure is part of their response to the rapid changes surrounding the global automotive industry.

In October 2017, Honda announced a review of its global automobile production system, and is promoting the optimization of production allocation and production capacity. This has led to Honda shutting down its manufacturing in Santa Rosa, Laguna as well as the factory that makes the current Civic Type R in Swindon, U.K., and the folding of Honda Automobile China into GAC Honda.
