After 37 Years, Toyota Is Still Making The Land Cruiser 70

For the Land Cruiser’s 70th anniversary, most eyes are focused on the all-new Land Cruiser 300 which just started sale in Japan, the Middle East, and soon, in the Philippines as well. But something peculiar is happening in Australia, one of the Land Cruiser’s biggest markets.

Instead of commemorating the Land Cruiser’s 70th birthday using the all-new model, they’re using instead the Land Cruiser Series 70 as basis for a limited-edition model.

The Land Cruiser 70 has been produced since 1984—making the thing older than Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez. It also is the most direct descendant of the original 40 Series of which Toyota decided to declare as a “Heritage Model.”

With 1.14 million of the 10 million Land Cruiser models sold worldwide going to Australia, Toyota released this limited-edition Toyota Land Cruiser 70.

Limited to just 600 examples—320 double cab, 200 single cab (yes, it’s available in pickup form), and 80 wagons (aka SUVs), the Land Cruiser 70 70th Anniversary Edition features a “heritage grille” emblazoned with the TOYOTA lettering, and black front bumper and wheel arch flares. It also gets blackened 16-inch alloy wheels and headlamp bezels while the front fog lamps and DRLs have been upgraded to LEDs. Naturally, a “70th Anniversary” emblem completes the exterior changes.

Inside, it gets black leather accented trim on the steering wheel, shifter, and seats together with woodgrain paneling on the instrument cluster. Oh, and it also gets an additional pair of USB Type-A chargers on the center console too.

Now, while the Land Cruiser 70 looks like an 80’s time capsule, it is powered by a relatively modern 205 horsepower, 430 Nm of torque 4.5-liter turbodiesel V8. The sole gearbox is a 5-speed manual. It also has front and rear lockers, a raised air intake, and a 130-liter fuel tank making it perfect for overlanding.

Sadly, the Land Cruiser 70 70th Anniversary Edition looks to be limited to where the regular Land Cruiser 70 is sold. In Australia, it’ll be sold with a price starting at AUD 78,500 (P 2.89 million) and capping off at AUD 80,050 (P 3.04 million).
