BMW Cars PH Ushers In A New Era With The X5 xDrive50e M Sport Plug-In Hybrid

With the passage of Executive Order 62 which expands the exemption of import duties to cover hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, SMC Asia Car Distributors Corporation (BMW Philippines), is adding a third powertrain option to its local vehicle line-up beginning with the X5 xDrive50e M Sport.

The X5 xDrive50e M Sport pairs BMW’s renowned B58 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with a new electric motor system to deliver a combined 489 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic, this enables a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (up to 130 km/h in all electric mode). Additionally, a sizeable lithium-ion battery (27.5 kWh) allows for up to 118 kilometers of all electric range. It recharges at up to 7.4 kWh using a CCS AC socket.

Meanwhile, the current X5 xDrive30d and its turbodiesel 6-cylinder (282 horsepower, 650 Nm) will remain in the line-up until supplies last.

The X5 xDrive50e M Sport comes with an adaptive two-axle air suspension system. With self-leveling capabilities and electronically-controlled dampers, the ride height can be adjusted—automatically or manually via the drive modes—for various driving scenarios. For example, it can be lowered for improved high-speed efficiency or raised for off-road situations.

Priced at P 6.990-million, the X5 xDrive50e M Sport comes standard with the M Sport package. This package includes the vertical air curtains and lower intake, pearl-effect chrome decorative trim detail, gloss black Shadow line accents, and a lit BMW kidney grille (Iconic Glow). It rides on 21-inch M light alloys with mixed tire sizes. LED headlights with high-beam assistant complete the exterior package.

There are six colors: M Carbon Black Metallic, M Brooklyn Gray Metallic, Manhattan Metallic, Skyscraper Gray Metallic, Alpine White, and Mineral White Metallic.

Befitting the X5 range, the X5 xDrive50e M Sport features a modern cockpit with BMW’s widescreen display being the central focus. Powered by the BMW Operating System 8.5, this setup minimizes physical buttons and relies on touch controls for operation. The display merges a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen.

Apart from the Sensafin upholstery, the X5 xDrive50e M Sport has open-pore poplar wood trims, an anthracite M headliner, four-zone climate control, electronically-adjustable front sport seats, a wireless charger, smartphone integration, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system.

The X5 xDrive50e M Sport also has an expanded selection of automated driving and parking aids. The BMW Highway Assistant Professional adds speed limit assist, exit warning, active navigation, route speed control, emergency stop assistant, lane change assist, and merging assistant on top of enhanced capabilities to its front-collision warning system which can detect pedestrians and cyclists.

The clever Reversing Assistant in the Parking Assistant Professional means the X5 xDrive50e M Sport can park into and out of spaces, and complete maneuvers over up to 200 meters. It can even be controlled from the outside using the My BMW App on an iPhone.

Speaking of the My BMW App, the X5 xDrive 50e M Sport benefits from BMW ConnectedDrive which enables not just remote control of vehicle functions, but allows users to access vital vehicle information to ensure users remain informed and in control. It also enables the BMW Digital Key which can lock or unlock the vehicle via ultra-wideband radio technology using a smartphone and Remote Software Update to facilitate wireless (Over-The-Air) software updates that can be delivered to vehicles without the need to visit a dealership.

The BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport retails for P 6,990,000 and comes with a portable flexi charger, a 5-year or 200,000-kilometer comprehensive warranty and an 8-year or 120,000-kilometer warranty for the electric battery.

Depending on the market acceptance of the BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport, BMW Philippines says they might consider bringing in more PHEV options in the premium segment.

  1. BMW? Does anybody care?

But if not, Filipinos would only end up dealing with the Japanese, courtesy of Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc..

  2. I find it odd that SMC and RSA have implemented anti-EV policies at their establishments and yet they participate in EV proliferation by distributing and selling said vehicles through their other ventures like SMC-ACDC, RSA Motors, and Velocita Motors. Very perplexing.
