Two BAIC Group brands, BAIC and Foton, both distributed by United Asia Automotive Group, Inc. (UAAGI) reveals its plans to expand its line-up with both traditional combustion engine and electrified offerings this 2025.
Riding on its strong performance in 2024, where its sales rose 21.57 percent to 3,579 units sold, Foton Motor Philippines is prepared to launch internal combustion engine versions of its Traveller Sierra MPV, and EV versions of its Wonder minitruck and tractor head.
Launched at the 9th Philippine International Motor Show, the Traveller Sierra MPV is currently available in all-electric guise. With a generous 77.28-kWh battery, it can go up to 303 kilometers on a single charge. Meanwhile, its 181 horsepower/330 Nm of torque single motor engine provides robust performance up to its 120 km/h top speed.
As the country’s first full-sized all-electric passenger van, the Traveller Sierra EV comes with a P 2.5-million price tag which, admittedly, is out of the reach for many. And that’s why, Foton will soon introduce an internal combustion version as well. Foton Philippines has yet to share any specs, but it’s likely to be powered by the Aucan 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine—something it shares with the Traveller van.
The Traveller Sierra will be joined by an EV version of the Wonder minitruck. Currently available with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 118 horsepower and 152 Nm of torque, the Wonder is priced at P 770,000. However, for those who want zero tailpipe emissions for their last-mile logistics solutions, the Wonder EV will come with a range of 280 kilometers. Tractive effort is courtesy of a 102-horsepower single-motor.
Closing things off at Foton’s side is the country’s first full electric tractor head. The Foton EST 6x4 EV packs a colossal 281.9-kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery sourced from CATL. Weighing in at 10.9 tons, this will have a maximum towing capacity of 37.97 tons. It has 353 horsepower, but peaks at 544 horsepower for short bursts.
Meanwhile, as one of UAAGI’s newest brands, BAIC will continue its dealer expansion program with plans to set up shop in “every major city in the Philippines.”
Buoyed by the success of its B30e SUV, they will soon be introducing an electrified version of the B60, known as the B60e (known as the BJ60e in China).
The BAIC B60e is a range-extended EV that relies purely on its electric motors for drive. Its 40.3-kWh battery gives it up to 200 kilometers of range before running out of juice. After that, a turbocharged 1.5-liter acts as generator bumping up the overall range to 1,200 kilometers. In terms of power, its dual motor setup offers 548 horsepower and 655 Nm of torque.
The second-generation B40 (BJ40 in China) will also arrive. Style-wise, it will gain the same aesthetics first shown on the B30e. It will also offer a heightened level of in-cabin tech with a large center screen that even expands to the passenger side.
As an off-road vehicle, the second-generation B40 offers 230 mm of ground clearance as well as an approach angle of 37 degrees and departure angle of 35 degrees. Currently, it’s only offered with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Sourced from Great Wall Motor, it makes 245 horsepower and 395 Nm of torque. This is mated to an 8-speed automatic. No word if BAIC Philippines will only offer this powertrain, or will continue to use the current model’s turbodiesel with 163 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque.
It looks like the only thing Filipinos breathe Chinese cars is affordability.
