Subaru's Saving the Manuals with the 2019 BRZ and 2019 WRX and We Drive Them Both

Name a performance car nowadays, and chances are, it’ll come with an automatic transmission. Whether it’s because carmakers will claim that a slush box will provide the same amount of performance minus the hassle of operating a third pedal, or increased market demand (bean counters will say: who buys manuals nowadays), this has become a fact of life—like how the sun rises in the east, sets in the west, and the new Supra’s basically a Z4 underneath. Thankfully, there’s still one brand that’s flying the Save the Manuals flag locally, and that brand is Subaru.

Review: 2014 Subaru BRZ M/T

Photos by Ulysses Ang
I always respect car manufacturers that come up with products that do exactly what they are engineered to do. With a name that means “Boxer Rear-wheel drive Zenith”, the Subaru BRZ may not have the catchiest nameplate out there, but as the pinnacle (or zenith) of sports cars is concerned, it delivers, and delivers beautifully. Above everything else in the market now, no other car delivers the same thrill, the same sense of connectedness, the same unadulterated driving experience as this sports car.

Review: 2013 Subaru BRZ A/T

Blame EDSA traffic, but driving a sports car isn’t a fun aspect anymore. The thought of having to squeeze a low-slung car in-between two buses is enough to send chills down your spine. And then, you have to consider the limited visibility, the discomfort of the firm ride, and the claustrophobic feel of the tight interior. Thankfully, not all sports cars are built and engineered the same way; there’s one that’s specifically designed to be driven every day, one that doesn’t compromise on practicality or comfort but feels like a shot of adrenaline every time you get behind the driver’s seat. This is the Subaru BRZ—the perfect antidote to the humdrum of everyday driving.

Subaru Launches BRZ tS for Japan Market

Subaru Tecnica International Inc. (STI) took the wraps off the Subaru BRZ tS (Tuned by STI), an enhanced version of the BRZ which adds "strength and nimbleness" effectively offering a driver "oneness with vehicle" and "agile handling pleasure".

Changes to the BRZ tS are limited to handling components (sorry, no turbocharger this time). The BRZ tS uses a large-diameter driveshaft and STI's unique flexible parts. Plus, the BRZ tS receives Brembo ventilated brakes as well as larger, 18-inch wheels and a STI designed front under spoiler. There's also a "STI / tS" fender garnish as well as a revised speedometer with the STI logo inside. The BRZ tS model is limited to 500 units including the 250 units of the GT PACKAGE.

Coinciding with the launch of the BRZ tS, a special GT PACKAGE is made available. The BRZ tS GT PACKAGE features a high-type dry carbon rear spoiler (actually nicked from the WRX STI S206), black 18-inch aluminum wheels, and Recaro front seats.

UPDATED: Subaru BRZ PHL Specs Leaked

With the Toyota 86 officially launching next week, Motor Image Pilipinas has already begun pre-selling their version of the acclaimed rear-wheel drive sports car. So, how much is the BRZ worth in Philippine Pesos? Well, if you're expecting a hefty discount versus the 86, you'll be disappointed. The Subaru BRZ is currently pre-selling for P 2,200,000 with deliveries starting 4th quarter of 2012.

However, the differentiating factor between the BRZ and its 86 cousin is the specs. The BRZ is expected to be better loaded, if just a tad. Preliminary specs include:

Toyota and Subaru Confirm 86 and BRZ Plans for Philippines

In two separate announcements, both Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) and Motor Image Pilipinas (MI) have announced that the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ will be made available to Philippine car enthusiasts.

TMP, the Philippine office of Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that the Toyota 86 (or in Europe, the GT 86) will be launched in the Philippine market. In an interview held at the sidelines of the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota Motor Philippines President Michinobu Sugata was quoted as saying, "We are launching the Toyota 86 in the Philippines quite soon."

Speaking in a non-committal manner, another Toyota Motor Philippines executive said that the Toyota 86 is slated for a mid-2012 launch with a price tag of no more than P 2-million.

On the other hand, MI has confirmed that the Subaru version of the two-door sports coupe, the BRZ will be on sale in the Philippines by mid-2012.

This just means that both the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86 will be made available at roughly the same time. This equates to more choices to car enthusiasts in the country. We can't wait!
