Spied! 2022 Geely Philippines Launching Emgrand To Take On Honda City, Toyota Vios

Geely is poised to enter one of the largest vehicle segments in the Philippines by volume: the sub-compact segment or B-segment, and they’re doing it with this: the 2022 Emgrand.

Teased on Geely Philippines’ own social media pages, it was then subsequently confirmed by photos  taken at their dealership (see lead photo, below photos). Although the logos and other identifying marks have been tapped off (it’s understood that a Focused Group Study has been done on the new model), it’s very clear that it’s the fourth-generation Emgrand (it appeared on the Geely Philippines website as early as October, but its existence has been denied at the time).

Launched in China in August of 2021, the Emgrand rides on BMA platform shared with the Coolray SUV. Although it’s meant to go against the Honda City and Toyota Vios, size-wise, it measures at 4,638 mm long. With a wheelbase of 2,650 mm, that puts it at par with the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis.

While it does have the Coolray’s underpinnings, the Emgrand uses a normally-aspirated 1.5-liter to keep the prices down (starting prices in China are at RMB 87,000 or P 674,000). Still, this new generation engine makes 114 horsepower output and 147 Nm of torque—pretty decent for its segment. Power is routed through a CVT.

Despite its budget pricing, it’s still pretty high-tech with full digital instrumentation, a switchgear plucked straight from Volvo, and a 10.2-inch infotainment system.

For the Philippine market, it’s natural for Geely Philippines to keep the exact pricing and specifications secret until its launch (it’s expected for the Q1 2022 debut). However, confirmed by the spy photos, it matches the top-of-the-line variant found in China. If the specs are the same, it will have 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/50R17 tires, a sunroof, and even a 6-way power adjustable driver seat. The interior is also finished in a unique blue and gray color scheme. This could point to the possibility of more than one variant for the local market.

Are you excited for Geely’s answer to the Honda City and Toyota Vios?
