Hyundai's 2022 WRC Challenger Is Perfect For Pimp My Ride

Hyundai’s new WRC challenger will make Pimp My Ride host Xzibit proud. The i20 N Rally1, the Korean carmaker’s entrant in the brand-new era of hybrid-powered WRC cars, features a unique rear-end with a wing-on-wing design.

As two-time manufacturers’ champions, Hyundai is embracing the new Rally1 hybrid regulations which will come into effect from the Rallye Monte-Carlo this January 20.

The new regulations allow carmakers to adopt more aggressive aerodynamic packages, and in the case of the i20 N Rally1 it comes in the form of a deeper front splitter, rear fender flares that wrap around the bumper, and of course, a wing-ception worthy rear-end.

The aero kit aside, the Rally1 will more importantly debut a plug-in hybrid powertrain. While the 134-horsepower electric powertrain is standardized for the series (developed by Kreisel Electrics), it’ll be used in tandem with the high-output turbocharged 1.6-liter engines currently used in the WRC.

Teams will be free to determine how much of the electric power and for how long they’ll used during special stages using three personalized maps. These maps will be based on driver input (throttle pedal and brake).

Hyundai says the team has worked tirelessly to develop its new contender for its ninth season at the pinnacle of international rallying, carrying out an intensive test and development program.

At the helm of the Hyundai i20 N Rally1 cars for all rounds of the 2022 championship will be the team’s rally-winning crews Thierry Neuville/Martijn Wydaeghe and Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja.

A third Hyundai i20 N Rally1 will be shared throughout the season by Swedish rising star Oliver Solberg and the experienced Spaniard Dani Sordo. Solberg will be co-driven by Elliott Edmondson, while Sordo begins his ninth season as a Hyundai Motorsport driver in 2022 alongside Cándido Carrera.
