Honda may be reassessing its EV strategy, but it will be doubling down on its target of having zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050. Central to that plan is the next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance System or ADAS which Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Director, President and Representative Executive Officer (Global CEO) Toshihiro Mibe has confirmed.
The next-generation Honda ADAS will assist the driver with the entire operation of the vehicle including acceleration, braking, and steering. This will be available throughout the entire route, whether on expressways (the current limitation of Honda Sensing 360 and Honda Sensing Elite) or surface roads for as long as the driver inputs a destination on the navigation system.
Honda says that developing its next-generation ADAS is especially challenging in urban areas, where there are various types of people sharing the road, and where turning at intersections is frequent. However, Honda says they will be able to overcome this by leveraging the recognition and behavior planning technologies the carmaker has amassed through its automated driving development.
Currently, next-generation ADAS technologies are being adopted mainly to high-end EV and PHEV models due to technical challenges such as power supply constraints and the need for State of Charge (SoC) cooling. However, Honda says it will be able to overcome this with highly efficient energy management and thus offer it to a broad range of EV and HEV models. It will launch first in North America and Japan around 2027.
Furthermore, Honda will be able to install ADAS-related devices while minimizing the impact on cabin space and vehicle design in line with their Man Maximum, Machine Minimum philosophy. This will enable them to equip even small vehicles with its next-generation ADAS.
Meanwhile, in China, Honda will work with Momenta Global Limited, a Chinese startup company developing autonomous driving technology, to develop its next-generation ADAS optimized for Chinese road conditions.
