Just when you thought you were marked, “safe” from the budol that’s the Mazda driving shoe by Mizuno, the carmaker this time entered into a collab with fellow Hiroshima-based company, Spingle, to come up with a line of sneakers to commemorate 35 years of the MX-5.
Both Spingle and Mazda are Hiroshima-based companies that pursue craftsmanship and unique manufacturing. These qualities alone make the partnership so apt. But add to the fact that Spingle sneakers have been the preferred driving shoe to many a MX-5 owner means it’s a match made in heaven.
The result is the collab which is officially known as the SP-MX5. The collection is two years’ worth of work and the shape that Spingle came up with contains a sole whose design follows the natural curve of the feet. Not only is this evocative of the MX-5’s curves, but it’s also meant to make it easier for drivers to switch between accelerator and brake pedal. Meanwhile, the heel is raised high for that distinctive design.
In terms of colors and materials, Mazda insisted that the SP-MX5 must be lightweight, hence the choice to go with kangaroo leather. The rubber sole itself is thin, but is reinforced on the outer side which is required of driving shoes. Suede marries these two materials together. Interestingly, the sole itself has the number, “5” stamped on it, harking to the MX-5’s number. The SP-MX5 comes in four vivid colors. Mazda had a hand in choosing the color combination and came up with Red/White, White/Black, Navy/Blue, and Black/Orange.
The box itself is also unique in that it contains line drawings of past MX-5 models making it a collectible among MX-5 owners, Mazda enthusiasts, and sneakerheads.
The Mazda x Spingle SP-MX5 is unisex and comes in seven sizes: XS (22.5cm), SS (23.5cm), S (24.5cm), M (25.5cm), L (26.5cm), LL (27.5cm), XL (28.5cm). Price? It’ll set you back 26,500 yen (P 10,300) and it goes on sale at select Spingle shops in Japan, the Spingle online store, and of course, the Mazda Collection Online shop.
