In a surprising move, Mazda has announced that it will adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) from 2027 onwards.
The agreement with Tesla will cover, for now, BEVs launched in the Japan market. No word if they plan to expand this arrangement to other markets such as North America.
There are currently 40,000 EV charging points in Japan, and the dominant standard is CHAdeMO thanks to massive government support. However, NACS has also been growing in popularity thanks largely to Tesla. It might even be more so as U.S. president Donald Trump has shown concerns that the use of CHAdeMO constitutes as a form of a non-tariff barrier.
Officially, Mazda’s decision to adopt NACS is for greater customer convenience. It will allow future Mazda BEV models access to Tesla’s supercharging network across Japan. The carmaker assures customers that it will be compatible with other charging standards, such as CHAdeMO and its possible replacement, ChaoJi, with the use of adapters.
