The focus of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup is most certainly the races, but that doesn’t mean that Toyota Motor Philippines can’t spring a surprise.
In a social media post (see below), Toyota Motor Philippines will be using Round 2 of the 2025 Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup to answer the question as to why we’re seeing a shortened Vios Cup racing season.
This is the debut of the Tamaraw Racing Concept. No details have been confirmed yet, but it was revealed as early as February by Toyota Motor Philippines president Masando Hashimoto. If it comes to fruition, it will likely take over from the Vios as Toyota’s flagship one-make racing series.
The likely inspiration for the Tamaraw Racing Concept would be the Super Pickup championship in Thailand, where the GR Hilux Champ is currently taking part. Over there, the Tamaraw (GR Hilux Champ) uses a race-prepped version of the 2GD-FTV 2.4-liter turbodiesel. In stock format, it makes 150 horsepower, but the racing mods include a new turbocharger, larger intercoolers, a custom exhaust, and reworked intake and fuel setups. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a manual transmission.
In addition, the GR Hilux Champ received a racy body kit with a deeper front bumper incorporating a massive cooling intake. The profile has been upgraded with fender extensions and racing wheels. The suspension’s been lowered with negative camber for added grip. At the back, there’s a large rear wing and diffuser. Inside, the cabin is stripped down with a lone bucket seat, sport teering wheel, and racing-spec switchgear. The roll cage is bolted directly to the ladder frame chassis.
Now, there’s another peculiar thing in the social media photo which is a green-hued GR86.
Taken at face value, it looks like Toyota Motor Philippines is launching a limited-edition GR86 based off the U.S. market’s Hakone Edition or Japan’s Green Limited Edition. Save for the Bronze wheels, it does match up nicely to the what’s been revealed in those markets so far.
Don’t expect too much, however, as it looks more like the GR86 in Moss Green. Moss Green is just one of several indent colors for the GR86 that Toyota Motor Philippines currently offers. This includes Sapphire Blue Pearl, Magnetite Gray Metallic, and Ice Silver Metallic. The only colors they stock up are Ignition Red, Crystal White Pearl, and Crystal Black Silica.
It’s a shame as the GR86 Hakone Edition does sport some nifty upgrades such as two-tone black and tan seats finished in Ultrasuede and perforated leather, a center console finished in Cast Black (as opposed to Satin Silver), and improved dynamics courtesy of Brembo front brakes and SACHS dampers.
Who knows, maybe Toyota Motor Philippines will hopefully use this chance to spring the refreshed GR86 which comes with enhancements to the transmission, chassis, and body.
Either way, attendees to Round 2 of the 2025 Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup will have plenty to see. Just make sure to register before making your way to Villar City. For event map and more details, go here.
