Apple CarPlay is expanding beyond infotainment systems with the launch of CarPlay Ultra. Launching first in select Aston Martin models, CarPlay Ultra becomes an in-car solution that expands from the traditional center screen to the instrument cluster, controlling all aspects of the car in the process to deliver a more customized, personalized expeirence.
Using just an iPhone 12 or later, running iOS 18.54 and later, CarPlay Ultra extends to the instrument cluster, with a number of seamlessly designed options for the speedometer and tachometer dials drivers can choose from as well as the ability to display maps and media in full screen providing drivers a way to curate their own multi-screen set-up, and the freedom to modify the layout.
While the underlying system is Apple’s, brands such as Aston Martin has worked with Apple to make sure that the British carmaker’s design philosophy remains instantly recognizable. Drivers can choose from several different instrument cluster themes, whilst also being able to tailor the colors and wallpapers to match their individual tastes.
Drivers can manage vehicle functions like radio and climate right from within CarPlay Ultra with touchscreen controls, physical buttons, or Siri. Drivers can also add widgets powered by iPhone that perfectly fit the infotainment screen or instrument cluster to provide information at a glance.
Initially launching in the USA and Canada, CarPlay Ultra is available on the Aston Martin Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish. It will roll out in global markets within the next year.
Other carmakers such as Porsche, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have all committed to use CarPlay Ultra in their future vehicles as well.
