Honda is recalling 137,000 2019 CR-Vs globally for airbags that can suddenly and unexpectedly deploy. The carmaker says there have been six instances of unwarranted airbag inflations leading to three injuries.

Apparently, metal burrs on the interior surface of the steering wheel can damage the wiring harness and cable reels that are part of the airbag system. This can lead to an electrical short and overheating of components, and in some cases, the sudden inflation of an airbag.

Honda says there may be warning signs ahead of an actual airbag inflation. These can include malfunction of steering wheel-mounted control buttons, the horn sounding unexpectedly, and illumination of the SRS warning light on the dash.

To fix this problem, Honda says they will install a protective cover on the steering wheel core, and replace the clock spring and wiring harness.

Of the total number of CR-Vs affected by the recall, around 118,000 were sold in the United States. We have contacted Honda Cars Philippines to determine if the Philippine market CR-Vs are affected, and this story will be updated with any feedback.
