2019 SsangYong Rexton 4x4 vs 2019 Nissan Terra VL 4x4

When SsangYong unveiled its 7-seater Rexton SUV, interestingly enough they dedicated one slide to its market positioning. With the mid-sized 7-seater SUV segment proving to be the market shaper in the local scene, the Korean automaker opted to compete in segments that represent the biggest bulk of sales. Third largest or 16 percent of sales belong to SUVs priced between P 2 to P 2.250 million, and this is where the top-dog Rexton, the 4x4 finds itself in.

Equally late to the 7-seater SUV game is the Terra. Despite being a clearly lucrative segment, Nissan bided their time, played it safe, and launched their own offering just last year (though honestly, it feels longer). Still, it’s managed to make strides, helping catapult the Japanese carmaker to number three in overall sales locally.

With two new entrants, which one deserves the attention and which one can be labeled: too late the hero. Stick around and find out.

Exterior

Right off the bat, it’s very clear that SsangYong and Nissan took two very different directions when styling their SUV. With the Terra being based off the Navara pickup, the overall vibe is somewhat utilitarian and rugged. With the high-looking stance, large fender gaps, and side step boards, it quickly communicates its go anywhere capability. Nonetheless, it’s not exactly the most head-turning SUV out there (it wasn’t a head-turner when it was launched last year either), but the simple, straightforward design is agreeable to everyone. Therefore, think of the Terra as a blank canvas that’s easily modifiable to each owner’s tastes.

With no pick-up based passenger vehicle or PPV in Korea, SsangYong looked west for the Rexton’s design direction. Squint hard enough and there are strong hints of American-style SUVs here from the general silhouette, slab-sided body, low-profile rubber, and doors that run all the way down the sill. And despite the questionable design of past Rextons or SsangYongs for that matter, this one’s actually pretty handsome. Park it next to any other PPV and it can stand tall and proud. It’s peppered with design cues from its smaller brother, the Tivoli XLV, minus any of the oddities.

Winner: SsangYong Rexton

Interior

The Terra’s Plain Jane design could have been forgiven if only they produced an SUV with a cabin worthy of a P 2.1-million price tag. Sadly, that’s not the case. Climbing aboard (made extra hard because there are no grab handles on the driver’s side) means taking a trip back to ten years ago or when the first-generation PPVs came out. There’s not an ounce of style in here, just a straightforward execution. There are no soft plastics here, too. Knock on the dashboard, the door panels, the center console—they’re all hard to the touch. It’s a shame because the build quality is actually pretty solid and there are been genuine efforts to spruce things up from the full-featured infotainment system and plush brown leather seats.

On the other hand, the Rexton continues to school the Terra with its stellar interior execution. Visually it already satisfies with its horizontal control motif, quilted leather seats, and abundance of piano black accents. Then it simply takes the whole SUV experience to the next level. Open the door and the driver’s seat automatically slides backward for easy entry (and there’s actually a roof-mounted grab handle too). A welcome chime, along with some fancy gauge animation from the programmable 7-inch high-res LCD screen embedded in the instrument cluster greets the driver. Then he discovers the ventilated seats, moon roof, and a whole lot more. This here feels like the absolute opposite of utilitarian. Having said that, the Rexton’s not entirely infallible. There are still some plasticky bits, but there are few and far between.

Winner: SsangYong Rexton

Space and Practicality

Dimensionally, almost nothing separates the Terra and the Rexton: the former is longer overall and taller, while the latter is wider with a longer wheelbase. True enough, they end up pretty even in real life. With the extra width and wheelbase, along with the more supportive seats (across all three rows, actually), the SsangYong’s better when the head count’s limited to five. However, because the second row doesn’t slide and tumbling them to get to the third row is a cumbersome three-step affair, the utility of the third row is quite limited. While the rearmost seats have a better pitch compared to the Nissan’s, the occupants here will find their hairdos tussled by the headliner while keeping their knees up throughout any trip.

Funny, because the opposite is true for the Terra. Despite its famed Zero Gravity Seats, it loses to the Rexton in terms of overall comfort, in as far as the first two rows are concerned. Yet, the compromise has increased its flexibility. With second row seats that tumble down with a single lever (or via a button on the center console), getting into the rearmost seats is much easier. It’s also more habitable with acceptable levels of headroom and a floor that’s been scooped out to keep the knees down. Moreover, the second row also slides fore and aft allowing more freedom in maximizing space across all three rows of seats. Oh, and while both have pretty good climate control systems, it must be said that the Terra’s air vents are spread across all three rows on the ceiling, while the Rexton makes do with a console-mounted one on the second row and side-blowing one on the third row.

Moving onto the cargo hold, it’s surprising that neither SUV could provide a completely flat luggage area; requiring a secondary “floor” instead. Visually, it seems the Rexton can hold wider stuff (say, two full-sized luggage side-by-side), while the Terra can hold taller stuff (the same two luggage placed one on top of the other); though the difference doesn’t seem much. Funny though that the SsangYong’s third row folds with one single pull tab while the Nissan takes two.

Winner: TIE

 Performance and Fuel Economy

In the process of engineering the Terra, without a doubt Nissan benchmarked other PPVs. As a result, it’s currently one of the top choices in the segment. Limited by its pickup-based platform which was, mind you, engineered to have a rear coil spring setup from the get-go, it rides well enough, especially when going over larger obstacles like humps and crater-sized potholes. However, it gets easily upset with smaller imperfections, shimming as opposed to gliding through them. Nonetheless, given the typically low ride comfort standards of a PPV, it scores pretty high.

The arrival of the Rexton therefore is very unfortunate for an SUV that’s supposedly the cushiest one around. It easily trounces everyone with a well-tuned suspension that irons out the choppiness typically associated with body-on-frame SUVs. The shock absorber’s rebound stroke could be better tuned, but at least the seats are able to absorb most of the impact. Both have weighty hydraulic-assisted steering, but the SsangYong’s is slightly lighter.

Hand-in-hand with the Rexton’s superb ride is its 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine. It’s down on both horsepower and torque versus the Terra’s 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit, but not by much. The powerplant feels more responsive while also offering NVH isolation that puts the SsangYong on a whole different level. Whereas the Nissan’s diesel rattle is vocal and the shudders transmitted through the floor and to the pedal box, the Rexton has none of them. However, both SUVs suffer from indecisive 7-speed gearboxes, though at least in the Rexton’s favor, it doesn’t end up lurching the entire vehicle in stop-and-go traffic. With similar weights, power outputs, and amount of forward gears, it’s no surprise that fuel economy between these two are closely matched with the Rexton doing 7.69 km/L at 16 km/h, while the Terra doing 7.14 km/L at a slower 13 km/h average.

Winner: SsangYong Rexton

Value for Money

Utilitarian the Terra may be, but Nissan used this as an opportunity to introduce its Nissan Intelligent Mobility to the mass market. Thus, it takes the lead here with driver assistive tech such as Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, a camera for the rear-view mirror (Intelligent Rear View Mirror) and a 360-degree camera with Moving Object Detection. It also has tire pressure monitoring and a video monitor for the rear seats. Among the two, it’s also more trail-ready with a locking rear differential and LSD.

As cool as all the tech in the Terra is, can it sway buyers from more traditional forms of luxury offered by the Rexton? Features like larger wheels, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, powered ventilated seats with three-setting memory for the driver, one-touch up/down windows, moon roof, electronic parking brake with auto hold, and a power tailgate are exclusive features on the SsangYong for an additional P 124,000 (P 2,230,000 versus P 2,106,000). This doesn’t even include the Rexton’s all-inclusive 3-year free PMS package that alone saves buyers around P 50,000. Perhaps the only thing going against the SsangYong is its questionable residual value and limited dealer footprint (there’s only one for now). Still, with such a large disparity in features versus price, the Rexton may be a good new car gamble.

Winner: SsangYong Rexton

If the Rexton had not appeared in its current shape, form, and price, the Terra would have kept its position as an easy to love, easy to recommend mid-sized SUV. Its impressive list of driver assist features gives it a slight advantage against the competition let down by its run-of-the-mill design and terribly pedestrian-looking interior. If only the goalpost were placed further than it current is, then the Terra could have been king. As it stands though, Nissan just wanted to be a notch above the competition, and the Terra did so, if only just.

Sadly, in the game for SUV supremacy, the rule of the Terra is short-lived and the new ruler comes from an unlikely source. The SsangYong Rexton may be the newest kid on the block, but it’s managed to arrive with guns blazing. There may be some uncertainties connected to the brand, and they’re well-founded; but as far as products go, this Korean has successfully upset the Japanese. The Rexton is the mid-sized SUV’s new king. Long live the king.

Not a terra owner at all but LMAO, if you're always on the streets, you could see at least 1 to 5 terras a day whereas the rexton, wtf? Not that much as it's still nowhere to be seen so it sounds like a stupid question. Obviously, there's also some biasedness here with most of the points for the rexton and the last line "long live the king" for the latter, as if naglagay naman ang korean automaker rito para sa talent fee ng pagiging epic journalist mo lol. Magkano kaya inabot yan, Mr. Ang?

Sorry pero to be honest, parang ganun kasi ang dating eh. Tsaka as far as i know, hindi naman ganun kasikat ang ssangyong para ipagmalaki mo nang ganyan. Not saying that you should be rooting for the nissan instead but sana naman mas naging fair and neutral ang comparison mo rito, like the many previous comparison articles you published which I have read before, hindi yung nagiging mas halata ang pambabash at pamumuri like in this article.

Hays you should have sticked na lang in that good, old formula of yours lol. Pero who the hell am i to dictate the way you should post your articles? Sana wag ako banatan na "if you don't like my article, then don't read!" kasi nagsasabi lang naman ako ng observations na totoo with regards to it.

Anyway, for those who will buy this korean suv, one must consider the longevity of the air-conditioning system of the car itself because, for all you know, yan ang #1 problem ng korean cars. Kahit bago pa yan, mabibilang sa daliri niyo ang pabalik-balik sa casa or sa aircon specialist para lang mapaayos yan tas babalik rin ulet. Diba nakakainis yun? Kaya isipin niyo din muna pag may time kasi nabiktima na po kami ng ganyan sa mga made in korea na sasakyang nakuha namin dati.

ANSWER: THE SSANGYONG REXTON WAS LAUNCHED JUST LAST THURSDAY, AS JP MENTIONED. THE TERRA WAS LAUNCHED IN 2018 WITH SALES STARTING LAST OCTOBER.

Sorry pero to be honest, parang ganun kasi ang dating eh. Tsaka as far as i know, hindi naman ganun kasikat ang ssangyong para ipagmalaki mo nang ganyan. ANSWER: SSANGYONG IS A NEW BRAND AND CONSIDER ME SURPRISED TOO THAT THEY TROUNCED THE TERRA IN THIS COMPARISON. IT SO HAPPENED I HAD BOTH 7-SEATER SUVS SO I FIGURED IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT TO COMPARE THEM. THE ARTICLE, I THINK IS FAIR AND I POINTED BOTH POSITVE AND NEGATIVES ON BOTH SIDES. AND THANK YOU FOR DISAGREEING...THAT'S THE POINT, WE CAN ALWAYS AGREE TO DISAGREE PERO YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO SAYING NA BAYARAN, ETC. ETC. THAT'S JUST NOT TRUE.

Hays you should have sticked na lang in that good, old formula of yours lol. Pero who the hell am i to dictate the way you should post your articles? 11. Mr. Ang, sorry na lang tlaga ha pero there's stuff kasi na it's hard to agree on based on what you have said in this article eh, that you're saying the rexton is 'a new king' when its nameplate is not that known yet to a lot of pinoys and it just sounded like you've already become so enthusiastic about it. Not saying that the vehicle has no chance here of becoming like that at all but we all do know that only time can tell, right? Kaya i was shookt when you said that last line, it implies that you are assuming already about it pero yun lang. I do agree that it has more fresher exterior and interior, more premium feel, etc. vs. the terra pero you don't have to put the latter down in a way that's ridiculous just to prove your point. Parang yun kasi ang naging interpretation sakin ng comparison mo rito. Just saying.

      Delete
    12. We can agree to disagree, but do you feel the Terra has the more premium interior? I'd say even the Fortuner / Everest / Montero Sport feels more premium than the late-to-the-game Terra. The Terra though has the NIM features which is a win for them.

As I mentioned in the story, if only they moved the goalpost further, they would be untouchable.

      Delete
    13. Of course not; hence, i've said that i agreed to you with that one, that the interior of nissan's ppv is obviously more plain than that of competition.

In fact, i don't really like the dashboard the most because it doesn't fit a decent suv like it but yes, its driver aid features are things that would make it desirable.

What i'm talking about is the status of the rexton and maybe, the terra as well. Only time will tell if both of these newcomer suvs will fare well in our roads and if they'll gain good reputation amongst pinoys.

But yes, nissan could have done a better job with the terra by making it feel more premium so it would be on par with the others.

      Delete
    14. Mr Ang, I couldn't say that the Fortuner has more premium interior than the Terra, I find the former's interior bland aside from the gauges but it's just my personal preference.

    1. Exactly. That's one of the things going against SsangYong at this point...the residuals are questionable. Having said that, the product is there.

  5. i would choose the rexton just for the quilted seats

  6. I believe the writer just presented all the facts and unbiased views on both units. I think Rexton won this comparison, however no way did he insisted on those planning on buying either of this cars to choose Rexton.

  7. Interior of the Terra is really way behind the Rexton. I would buy this for ventilated seats which is really helpful in our tropical seats

  8. I have watched the CarsGuide Australia comparison video of the Rexton against the 7-seat rivals on Youtube, which I've just found out that the Rexton doesn't have a home screen on its infotainment system.

  9. eh review to ahh...hindi naman market analysis..bakit ang daming hater ni ulyssis porke mas maganda lang an rexton..maganda naman talaga korean..its just that maganda lang talaga appeal sa public ang ruggedness/simplicity ng PPVs pero it doesnt mean bulok ssangyong... koreans are getting better...A LOT BETTER.

dami kasing bitter na pinoy eh =)) matalo lang sa review kotse nila, pikon agad. todo post agad sa forums ng kapwa owner tapos bash sa reviewer lol. we have a raptor, a hilux, a montero and a fortuner in the fam... lol lang lahat ng groups na nagaway away sa mga yan.

    1. Not necessarily bitter naman po, just being practical and rational.

Try imagining yourself owning a ssangyong rexton or any ssangyong vehicle for 5-10 years, do you think it will live up to its hype? Maganda nga, oo pero one can't still assume yet that the same can be said for the car after many years of ownership, although honestly, ok yung 3 years na free pms niya na parang ginaya yung mazda at 5-years warranty pa. Yun na siguro pinaka-edge niya vs. the usual competitors pero sana, ok din ang after sales service, kasi if parang ford lang, edi balewala din.

I just hope na ok ang aircon nito kasi yan ang #1 sakit ng mga korean cars. Try asking some local mechanics out there and they'll probably say the same thing about them.

  11. Combining all the pros and cons, I would pick the Rexton. However, I prefer a compact crossover or even a compact sedan/hatch as I really don't need an suv. Just pick what you need, want and what you can comfortably afford.

  12. Good review. Though the outcome is not as initially expected. Keep it up! Considering dealer network and after sales service though, I would still choose terra over rexton. Kudos to ssangYong for coming up with a better packaged SUV.

And being a newly relaunched brand, limited pa ang FINANCING options. Unlike other brands kaya bigla lumobo yung Terra. Maganda sa labas pero interior and performance, not worth it...

  19. Before you guys make undesirable comments to berate another car brand like SsangYong...
One must also consider looking into the HISTORY. Let's all open our minds and let me educate you on this matter. At the end of this post, I hope that you've realized/learned to appreciate what TRUE QUALITY is and VALUE FOR MONEY...

SsangYong is not a new brand at all, they've been here in the PH for a little while now (Since the 90s). Well, technically, it's newly relaunched (2016) with a NEW DISTRIBUTOR, SSANGYONG BERJAYA MOTORS PHILIPPINES. (SISTER COMPANY OF MAZDA PH)

If you guys did your homework on how SsangYong emerged as a Premium Korean Carmaker... "In 1991 SsangYong formed a powerful partnership with Daimler-Benz. This allowed SsangYong to develop products using Mercedes-Benz technology." - https://www.ssangyonggb.co.uk/pages/about-us/our-story

  20. Continuation...
Ever since, the REXTON is always on the Luxury approach than ruggedness, it's UNIQUE unlike others. Actually, most of the models of SsangYong are. They used to put Licensed Mercedes-Benz engines in all models, making SsangYongs' equipped with a reliable powertrain. (The ever reliable M111 Petrol & OM602 Diesel engines, to name a few)
They are also very particular on the details. ESPECIALLY THE NEW ONE'S RIGHT NOW. Go ahead, TAKE A CLOSER LOOK FOR YOURSELF and PROVE ME WRONG.

I'll guide you on some small items to check on the REXTON:
(Mind you, These aren't sourced cheap, and mostly are MADE IN KOREA ofcourse)
    TAKE NOTE!

    (Exterior)
    - Headlamps/Tailamps/Foglamps
    - Door opening/closing. (Cheap sounding? -NO.)
    - All windows/windshield. (YES, They're Saint Gobain Sekurit at 70% Transparency, Just like BMW, Rovers & Benz's, How's that?)
    - Open the Engine Bay/Hood. (Was it difficult/heavy to lift it up? HAHA!)
    - Look at the Tires. (Hankook Dynapro HP2 is a lot better than Bridgestone Dueler H/T 684 II, Duh!)
    - Look at the Rear Brakes. (YES, ALL 4-Discs, even the New MUSSO Pick-up is! Unlike your usual PPV-SUV)

    (Interior)
    - Check the quality of the leather seats. and ofcourse, Ventilated. (There's a switch for the seat cooler/heater, only found in Luxury variants)
    - Feel the steering wheel. (Go ahead, it's different)
    - Pay attention to the details of the Aircon vents and Shut-off lever. And also notice the Radio round button and Aircon round switch button on the center stack. FEEL IT. (I know, Feels premium right?? Can you find that in the other SUV in this article?)
    - Look at the cluster. Navigate it. It will speak for itself.
    - Electronic Parking brake with Auto hold? (WOW! Which vehicles can you usually find this? Benz? BMW?)
    - Look at the Power Window switches. (WOW! ALL 4-AUTO, again, can you find this in that other SUV?)

  21. Continuation Final part...

These are just some of the items that I noticed VS the competition. To good to be true? GO ON, Book a Test Drive and SEE FOR YOURSELF. You can stay inside the TERRA and feel the DIESEL, while I stay inside the REXTON, with a powerful & responsive 7G-Tronic gearbox and Enjoying a Very SMOOTH DRIVE, with a quiter cabin listening to good music from my iPhone...

And by the way... I believe Mr. Ang forgot to mention that the REXTON 4x4 has Pre-collision warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking and AUTO Start/Stop feature like the Mazda's... Pretty cool right? Everything is practically equipped in this SUV. And the SRP is just below P2.5M!

    P.S.
This is NOT our first SsangYong, we had already an older 1, which lived almost 235Tkms before we got rid of it. And it was still running good. Engine is still 1-click, a Petrol 2.3L. The usual repairs and Casa maintenance periodically. NO OVERHEAT, NO A/C Failure, although we had a FREON Recharge once and that's it. That's all in 12 Years...

AND We still have a current Nissan, and Toyotas. with NEW and Latest Models. Unfortunatey, our 2016 NISSAN had a LOT OF WARRANTY CLAIMS (CVT, Auxillary Fan failure, A/C failure twice, YES AIRCON. All happened within 100Tkms Warranty of 3 years) (NISSAN has a BIG Dealer Network? TELL ME, WHICH ONE WILL GIVE THE BEST SERVICE AND I'LL TRY IT OUT. So far, we've tried 5 already, and I would rate them 5/10)
Luckily, we had nothing like this in our 2015 Toyotas... Toyotas' are FAR MORE CONSISTENT. (How about LEXUS? How many dealers can you find? It's not always about Quantity, its Quality)

That's why I can personally vouch on a SsangYong... Because we had EXPERIENCED it personally. And we did get a new one for the 2nd time around and WE'RE VERY HAPPY WITH IT.
With 3 Years FREE SERVICE & a 5-year warranty. NOT BAD AT ALL... and Now that SsangYong is backed by sister company, Mazda Ph... IT DESERVES A SECOND LOOK.

TRY IT FOR YOURSELF, and let's see if you can say the same thing about a SsangYong ever again...

To date, There are already 8 SsangYong dealers NATIONWIDE, and counting......
    1. SsangYong Pulilan (formerly in Quezon Ave, under ANC Group)
    2. SsangYong Cebu (under distributor SBMP)
    3. SsangYong Sta. Rosa (Auto Asia under SBMP)
    4. Ssangyong Otis (Formerly Mazda Otis, under Autohub Group)
    5. SsangYong CDO (under Autohub Group)
    6. SsangYong Davao (under Autohub Group)
    7. SsangYong GenSan (under Autohub Group)
    8. SsangYong Butuan (under Autohub Group)

I'll leave you this short message...

Why drive what everybody else is driving?
    Why be like everyone else?
Why fit-in when your were born to stand out?
    Drive a SsangYong...
    DRIVE DIFFERENT!

    Thank You!!! Peace out!
